How to Customize USB Type-C Cables
The USB Type-C cable is the rising standard for transferring data and power. According to the NPD Group’s Retail Tracking Service, the sales of USB-C in 2017 is more than ten times compared to 2016. Today, it’s included in new devices like smartphones, tablets, and laptops. In the near future, it will likely be used in everything and will replace the older and larger USB connectors. As a result, consumer brands are now looking for cable manufacturers that will let them customize their own cables.
Are you one of them? Do you also plan to customize your own USB Type C cables? If so, you must take note of each aspect in the customization process.
USB Type-C Customization Options
Current & Functions
You should think carefully about what functions (i.e., 5V3A, 5V, 2.4A, 4V2.A, etc.) you want for your USB cables. This is because the cable materials, size, and other features will depend on what capacities you want for your cables. Also, the specifications should meet local requirements and your level of demand.
Once you determine the full capacity you want for your cables, the manufacturers will provide the best solutions to achieve it. For example, manufacturers will use the internal core of 28AWG wire gauge for 5V3A USB-C cables to ensure that the charging current will reach 3A based on the local flammability rating, corrosion resistance, temperature resistance, cable material requirements, and other specifications.
USB cables sold on the market are made from different materials. The most common are PVC and TPE. Aside from these materials, additional weaving will be performed on the cables for further protection.
- PVC comes with several features: non-flammable, weather-resistant, and durable. The outer surface is harder, and the adhesive paper is more prominent.
- TPE is both elastic and durable. Some data lines use this material because it has excellent texture.
- Nylon mesh, which is based on PVC, is used mainly for weaving. The main purpose is that it is flexible and useful in protecting the data lines from getting damaged due to repeated use.
Length & Thickness
The length and thickness of USB cables can also be customized to fit the functions they are intended for. For instance, charging cables should be short and thick. This is because the electrical resistance of wires is higher when the wires are longer and have smaller gauges. This will cause the devices to charge longer.
The connectors can also be made from different materials, depending on your requirements. The type of material used will also affect the performance of the USB cable, which is why you should be specific to the standards you want your cables to meet.
- Zinc-alloy – Although it’s not as attractive as gold, this metal is also commonly used in USB plugs due to its several features. It is durable, corrosion-resistant, and rust-proof.
- Gold-plated – This is preferred by many for a variety of reasons. Gold is an excellent conductor and can be soldered easily. It has great corrosion resistance properties, and it is aesthetically pleasing.
- Nickel-plated – This is not as popular as the others, but you can use nickel-plated plugs if you prefer something more economical.
Outer Casing Material
You can choose which material will be used in the outer casing of the USB cables. Your options include zinc alloy shells, ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) rubber shells, gold-plated nickel plating, etc. If you can’t find the materials you want for your cables, you can simply inform and ask the manufacturers if there’s a way to use a certain kind of material.
You can choose the design of the packaging. You can decide which color, design, and how the prints are going to be printed – either lasered or sprayed.
Print Your Logo
You can also use your logo for the USB cables. If the products are made with plastic shells, the logo will then be imprinted through spray printing. If they are made with metal shells, the logo will be placed through laser printing.
How to Work With USB Cable Manufacturers
Step 1: Determine the product specifications and confirm with your suppliers.
After you determine what you want and need with your products, you’re going to discuss it with your suppliers to come up with the best solution to achieve it. Aside from the customization process, it should also be determined whether you need an OEM or ODM.
An OEM (original equipment manufacturer) is a company that manufactures equipment and parts that will be sold by other manufacturers. It is ideal if you have clear specifications and simple requirements for the logos, product colors, packaging options, etc. This is the process discussed above.
An ODM (original design manufacturer) is a company that both designs and manufactures products according to the specifics of the client. The finished products will then be rebranded by another company. It is needed when your requirements are more complicated. These will include solutions, drawings, mold opening, packaging, testing, sample recognition ( a process which lets you test the samples repeatedly to ensure that they meet the product requirements), mass production, etc.
Step 2: Check and test the performance of the samples.
After you have shortlisted your suppliers, you must ask for samples first. You have to carefully check and test the samples if they meet your requirements – both the design and the function. If you are satisfied with the products, you will then negotiate with the supplier.
Step 3: Negotiate with your supplier.
The negotiation process with the factory tackle on various things including shipping details, payment, warranty terms, etc. For example, if the factory is in China and you’re from the United States, you must discuss who will handle the shipment, if it’s them or if they can recommend a shipping company. Make sure that you ask all the right questions and address all concerns so you can land a deal with an excellent supplier at a fair price.
Even though there are many USB-C cables sold on the market, they’re not created equal. This means some are effective, while others are not. If custom USB cables are what you are looking for, you must focus on the quality, not just the materials, but also the machines used, the workers, etc. An excellent way to achieve that is by getting a reliable fiber optic cable manufacturer like Koincable.
